How To Avoid Electrocution In The Event Of Flooding
Fortunately, floods since then haven’t had quite the same level of impact but if you happen to reside in an area that is in danger of flooding then you should know what measures to take to avoid the risk of electrocution.
There are 3 main precautions as follows:
- Turn off the main switch
- Make sure that all appliances are unplugged and removed from power outlets
- Contact an electrician to come and check for any damage before turning the power back on
Keep safe around appliances
Make sure that electrical appliances are well away from any electrical faults to prevent any further damage or loss. A damp hairdryer or a wet toaster can give you an electric shock or spark a fire so it’s important that all appliances are declared to be 100% safe before being plugged in for use once again.
A reputable electrician will be able to assess with great accuracy whether there are any potential electrical risks which includes testing your domestic appliances for water damage or faulty electrics.
Here at Static Electricians we can check out your safety switches and if you don’t have one, then it’s a simple enough job for us to install one for you. A safety switch is designed to cut off the power before electrocution occurs.
Care also needs to be taken outside of your property so keep a close look out for damaged or fallen power lines. These are extremely dangerous and can be hard to see at night or if they are hidden in trees or laying around amongst other flood debris. It’s best to assume that any fallen line is ‘live ‘, so keep well away from it and warn others. Always report fallen or damaged power lines or branches which are touching power lines to your electrical provider.
Never, ever be tempted to repair any damaged electrical appliances yourself since it you risk the possibility of electrocution. In reality the most work you’re allowed to do is change a light bulb, anything more should be carried out by a Licensed Electrician or R.E.C (Registered Electrical Contractor). Ignore this advice and it could be at your peril.
